Inspiration Und Innovation – Book Of WBV-GPA Buildings & Best-Practice-Projects From All Over The World

Inspiration and Innovation is the title of the Wohnbauvereinigung für Privatangestellte‘s (eng. housing association for private-sector employees) 2020 yearbook which showcases innovative buildings in Vienna and best-practice-projects from all over the world tacking the imminent issue of climate change, demographic development, rising construction costs, and its consequences.

How do we want to shape the future? Through communication, cooperation and collaboration.

Global planning, building, and living are in a constant state of transformation as a vast number of innovations and improvements in technical achievements, but also in social, cultural, and urban planning take place. Besides the advancing climate crisis, new innovations in structural achievement in material development, building technology, and physics, to the social and operational areas of mobility, networking, functionality, and more, shape the path of development. And as Vienna is one of the cities in Europe most affected by global warming – these issues are more urgent than ever.

The book’s structure follows WBV-GPA‘s motto: People, Standards, Milestones, by dedicating a chapter for each issue in which local efforts and innovations are compared to international construction projects and research work.

Wohnbauvereinigung für Privatangestellte (WBV-GPA) puts these innovations and developments under a microscope and takes a close look at the current trends at the global, regional, and local levels. The book’s structure follows WBV-GPA‘s motto: People, Standards, Milestones, by dedicating a chapter for each issue in which local efforts and innovations are compared to international construction projects and research work. This comparison of various projects and innovations highlights a common global goal of mastering the challenges ahead, through communication, cooperation, and collaboration. This style of network thinking has become a leading quality and a cornerstone of the work of WBV-GPA. The texts were written by a team of the best architecture journalists in the country.

Inspiration and Innovation is wrapped in a sleeve of Gmund Urban Cement paper, chosen for its unique visual and tactile feel reminiscent of concrete

Viennese design studio Schrägstrich Kommunikationsdesign, who has long been trusted with the design of the WBV-GPA publications, understands the need for sustainable values in communication design, and how high design standards do not need to conflict with ecological values.

For the Inspiration and Innovation yearbook cover, the studio chose the stylishly contemporary Gmund Urban Cement 310 gsm, for its unique visual and tactile feel reminiscent of concrete, which is achieved by repurposing real stone dust from Austria.

For the Inspiration and Innovation yearbook cover, the studio chose the stylishly contemporary Gmund Urban Cement 310 gsm, for its unique visual and tactile feel reminiscent of concrete, which is achieved by repurposing real stone dust from Austria. A perfect fit for a title focusing on innovation and green solutions in architecture and city planning, as in the production of the NAUTILUS® SuperWhite FSC®-certified recycled paper used for the core 1,5 times less energy and 2,5 times less water is used, compared to the production on virgin fiber paper.

In the design process too, emphasis was placed on local, as for the title and headlines, Johanna Kleedorfer, Art Director at Schrägstrich, chose the sans serif typeface Roba by Viennese typographer Franziska Weitgruber. The inspiring idea behind the typeface is that it breaks with the usual, uniform white space within the letterform and in this way creates graphic tension.
