DIY Schultüte

Can you still remember your first day of school? My memory is a bit blurry. I can remember sitting next to a boy who would not talk one word, wearing my pink Princess Sparkling school bag and holding an equally pink giant paper cornet filled with candy and school supplies, a so-called Schultüte, in my hand. As the school season is about to start next week in Austria I thought to give it a try and do my own Schultüte.

In German-speaking Europe, the Schultüte has a long tradition of making the first day of school sweet and fun. First introduced in the 19th century the Schultüte is a back-to-school classic. You can either do it yourself or buy it ready-made – I decided for option one. My ice cream cone shaped Schultüte is inspired by Anda Corrie’s version on the Etsy blog, but I decided to make it a bit less sparking & girly (my taste has changed a bit over the years).

WHAT YOU NEED

  1. Whiteboard
  2. Brown kraft paper
  3. Brown lightweight papeR
  4. Glue stick
  5. Tape
  6. Scissors
  7. Stapler
  8. Fabric
  9. Ribbon
  10. Silk or tissue paper
  11. Candy & school supplies for the filling

HOW IT WORKS:

The first step is to form the basic cone of the Schultüte out of whiteboard which you staple or glue together and trim with the help of the scissors. The next step is to laminate the white board with the brown kraft paper and the ice cream cone is ready now. I decided to apply some brown paper chips in order to simulate chocolate on the cone.

Now we will add the ice cream to the cone. For this purpose, you staple the fabric to the cone with the wrong side facing out as you will later pull it up and close it with a ribbon. Before you close the cone you need to add the school supplies and the candy and on top some silk or tissue paper to make it look round and ice creamy. I decided not to cut off the remaining fabric but to form a knot with it and tie our Design&Paper ribbon around it.

To finish off the Schultüte you can add a paper tag to the ice cream with a nice message (in my case the Design&Paper logo). And it is ready!

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!
