Elegantly Expandable Paper Furniture “Soft Collection” by Molo Studio

Vancouver, Canada based design and production studio molo is led by Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, a creative duo who are inspired by the concept of smaller, tactile objects having true potency in the experience of a space. Creating work that balances between realms of art, design, and architecture, molo’s award-winning “Soft Collection” of flexible and expanding paper furniture of space partitions, lighting, table, and seating elements exemplifies the studio’s dedicated approach to finding material alternatives and authentic design.

A series of paper furniture, made with a honeycomb structure that allows for movement, flexibility, and sustainable living

The Soft Collection was originally developed as a conscientious endeavor to provide sustainable alternatives to traditional, rigid building materials. Enabling space to suit diverse uses over time, and utilizing flexible, responsible materials like paper and textile, Forsythe and MacAllen created a series of sustainable and elegantly expandable furniture.

The honeycomb geometry of the structure and the softness of the material allows for the objects flexible and curvy form, while magnetic panels enable stability, and an opportunity to connect multiple elements to one another – and so an endless realm of possible styles and designs.

The Soft Collection is recognized for its unique, poetic beauty as well as pragmatics design, earning a place in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art

The paper used for the softwall and softseating is a careful blend of new and recycled fibres that bond to form a sturdy matrix, which is coated with a non-toxic fire retardant and structured in layers to create the final design. The collection ranges from massive space dividers to smaller stools and benches, all that is delivered in flatpack, and the unfurled into compact furniture capable of surprising strength and flexibility.

The design series is recognized for its unique, poetic beauty as well as pragmatic design, and both the softwall and softseating were acquired by the New York Museum of Modern Art for their permanent collection. The softwall was also honored with the prestigious Danish INDEX Award, for design to improve life.
