The Letterist Calendar 2022 is More Than Stationery, it’s Objet d’art

Our love for all things paper is shared by The Letterist, a beloved stationery brand that we’ve featured before here. The Letterist was founded and is run by an incredibly talented creative and paper designer Anja Savic known for her incredible skill to design and produce beautifully minimal and exclusive stationery which captures “Love on paper”. In addition to personal stationery, wedding invitations, and identity development, each year The Letterist creates a unique letterpress desk calendar – and 2022 does not disappoint!

The new 2022 calendars by The Letterist come in two shades – white and black – printed on beautiful Pur Coton Absinthe and Puodre-Noire design paper

The Letterist’s calendars are so much more than simple calendars, as they are paper design objects. Savic masters the minimalist approach so well, with each thoughtful detail and production decision, carefully considered.  The calendar includes 12 individual pages, with blind embossed months, screen-printed dates, and gold foil-stamped quotes from some of the greatest female artists, poets, and thinkers in history – printed on Pur Coton Absinthe and Poudre-Noire 350 gsm papers.

The unique and tactile texture of these (Pur Coton) papers is perfectly suited to the letterpress, foil stamping, debossing, and embossing techniques we so frequently use and have become known for.

“The Pur Coton paper collection is without a doubt my favorite in the Design Papers catalog, and at least one, of the four shades, almost inevitably features in every single project we create. The unique and tactile texture of these papers is perfectly suited to the letterpress, foil stamping, debossing, and embossing techniques we so frequently use and have become known for”, Savic explains.

Known for their attention to detail, masterful eye for design, and color and material choices, The Letterist usually works within a muted color palette letting the design speak for itself. And for the first time in 2022 the calendars are sold, not only in white but in black as well. “Over the last few years, we have used more colorful shades from the Color Style collection, but for our 2022 calendar, I wanted to do an edition that was true to our famously neutral and minimal brand color palette. I shared a poll with our Instagram followers to see whether they would prefer a white one or a black one, and when the votes came in at a tie, I knew we had to do both.”

I have always imagined or wished for our calendar to be more of an objet d’art than a functional piece of office stationery – and I have such a reverence for these age-old print techniques that I could never personally bring myself to write over them.

Explaining the surprising inspiration for the black version, Savic says; “I have received photographs from people showing me their calendars on their desks, and my heart always breaks a little when I see that people have circled dates and written on them. I have always imagined or wished for our calendar to be more of an objet d’art than a functional piece of office stationery – and I have such a reverence for these age-old print techniques that I could never personally bring myself to write over them. Realizing that the black paper – Poudre Noir – would make it a little more difficult for people to write on them definitely played a part in my decision to use it.”

The calendars come packaged within a clear acrylic case, that turns into a desk stand, wrapped in “buttery” smooth Neobond bands

The calendar comes with a clear custom-made acrylic stand, designed to present the calendar in a beautiful way,  wrapped with a band made of Neobond Black & Grey 200 gsm. “The Neobond black and grey papers have also become a staple of our packaging toolkit, as they enable us to create sturdy, flexible, water- and tear-proof bands with which to package all our products. I love the unique shade of greenish-gray and the subtle accent it adds to brighten up all our stacks of cards and invitations”, Savic says.

I’ve also convinced a few clients to make their wedding invitation envelopes out of Neobond, mentioning the same benefits with regards to durability for the post and mailing, and adding that the texture is fascinating and “buttery.” They have all responded to say how much they love them, and that they are indeed very buttery!

“We have experimented with all kinds of packaging materials and formats, and these simple 60mm bands have by far proved to be the best solution – offering both the functionality and a striking first impression. Stationery is made to be held in the hand, so any paper like this that makes you want to touch it is a win in my book”, Savic concludes.

The 2022 calendars are all sold out but look out for their new 2023 edition in their online shop later this year.
