Chocolat Factory’s Playful Hot Chocolate “Solution” Packaging By Zoo Studio

Working effortlessly in different disciplines, including corporate identity, packaging, editorial design, campaigns, naming, websites, audio-visuals, and interior design, Zoo Studio delivers not only what is asked of them, but beyond expectations.  Their recent work for Chocolat Factory includes a clever packaging design based on the concept of a three-part cylinder that gives  “the solution” almost like a game.

“If you match the three parts, you have all the information ordered, you have achieved the solution.”

Chocolat Factory is a well-known brand of chocolate products with 17 stores spread across Spain, who commissioned Zoo Studio with designing packaging for their new range of hot chocolate products. Chocolat Factory requested a design that follows the brand’s defining style, but not in a limiting, strict way. The controlled use of typography, as the main element of the design, and solid colors have defined the identity of this brand since its creation.

Zoo Studio’s given task included both the naming of the product and the creation of a proposal based on a double-meaning concept: “Solution”, which refers to the dissolution of chocolate in liquid and at the same time, also to the idea of solving a puzzle. The “Solution” idea for the packaging includes a cylindrical structure and a game-inspired opening mechanism which means dividing the package into 3 parts; the base, a central ring, and the lid. Both the ring and the lid can rotate in both directions. “If you match the three parts, you have all the information ordered, you have achieved the solution.”

The packaging line consists of three products, which is given cohesive unity through composition and typography. While matching color combinations are used to differentiate the products and describe the characteristics of each one: one with milk, one with spices, and one with 72% cocoa. Once the lid is removed, you can find the user instructions inside. This interior surface is also where the product-specific technical texts are placed.
